Found this documentary about every missing episode of Classic Doctor Who. The first incident alone is rage inducing. The complete 7 episodes of Marco Polo, were at one point found intact in Africa. The owners asked BBC if they wanted it back and BBC said no. Then the owners, an African TV studio, destroyed them

It is a shame the 2nd Doctor era has so many missing episodes. He was really a visual actor and so much gets lost when you only have audio. Enemy of the World used to be almost completely missing and was widely considered to be a mediocre series of episodes. Since it was recovered 10 years ago it is now considered one of the better series of episodes.

It wasn't just classic Who; the BBC just sucked at preservation in general during that time. Lots of old shows and episodes have been lost to time because of it.

Monty Python's Flying Circus was almost wiped, but luckily Terry Gillman bought the tapes before they were taped over.

BBC (and networks in general) just didn't see the value in preservation of tapes back then, sadly.
