I remember in Ultima 7 which came out in 1992, you could visit a brothel. In that game you were able to make the main character male or female. And in the brothel you could ask for male or female prostitutes. But all that happened if you chose same sex was the front desk would say "whatever floats your boat" and then the screen goes black

It was kinda ahead of it's time though, when I think about it now. If there is an earlier existence of gay relationships in video games, I am not aware of it.

Wikipedia says it's Le crime du parking or Le mur de Berlin va sauter, French text adventures that were both released in 1985. Not the most positive representation, both were the bad guys.

Moonmist is another text adventure released in '86. One of the storylines revealed that a character was a lesbian.

Caper in the Castro was the first one to focus on LGBT themes. It's yet another text adventure starring a lesbian PI who's searching for her friend, a drag queen. It was distributed on bulletin board systems and the creator asked for donations to HIV charities in place of payment.

IIRC unless you know the source material it's impossible to tell they're girlfriends in game.

I thought him telling Luigi that he'd been on more wieners than ketchup was a little out of character but who am I to question Miyamoto
