For a decade or longer zombies have been shifted from supernatural beings raised by a spirit or magic user to the result of a disease. Why?

It makes sense for vampires to go from Nosferatu from... Nosferatu to Edward from Twilight. Because sex sells. Get the viewer horny and make some money. Simple.

I think it might have something to do with people not really having much respect for the dead anymore. Traditionally, a big reason necromancy is such a diabolical sin is because you're disrespecting the spirit and messing with their afterlife by abusing their corpse. People don't really believe in spirits anymore. A corpse is just a corpse now. A bag of bones and flesh. Like, doctors used to get a ton of hatred and vitriol for vivisection, now nobody gives a fuck. Organ donation is not only considered normal but a positive thing that people should be encouraged to do.

It makes more sense. People are super irresponsible and more likely to spread a disease that turns you into one than some guy stumbles upon the little black book of horrors and tries to raise a hot zombie gf

Zombies and vampires do exist in nature you know. What do you think mosquitoes are? Or specifically the vampire bat? There just hasn't been any human form vampires that we know of.

For zombies there is some type of fungus that infects the brains of ants and essentially makes them its slave. The ant is in a zombie like state because it no longer has any control or awareness of its own body. Sure maybe not full on zombie, but still fairly close.

I know, but I'm talking about the media completely abandoning the supernatural zombies for the scientific zombies.

hur dur real life zombies wouldn't be a threat because they would be all attack and wouldn't do basic self-preservation things like staying hydrated and practicing basic hygiene! A real life zombie would die out in a few days from exhaustion if it didn't kill itself by stumbling and accidentally injuring itself! HUR DUR ME SO SMART! XD also bugs and animals would have fun chewing up a zombie! they smell of rotting flesh and don't have the means to defend themselves. :) :) :)

Here's a terrifying thought I've had about modern era zombies. Assuming it was possible, when a person turns, how do we know if the person they used to be (usually referred to as a ''soul'') isn't trapped inside? Similar to how when a person is in a coma? What I mean is, what if they are still shackled to their formal corpse, until someone frees them by damaging/destroying the brain?

To make that horrible thought even worse, what if even the slightest part of that person, despite clearly not being in control at all, is still aware?

Before anyone says no way that could happen, the record for bringing someone back to life is around 17 hours. Meaning a person (soul, if you will) doesn't immediately disappear upon death.

because it being caused by a virus is more "real," it's easier to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride with 28 days later type zombies than a movie where it's magic or satan or something. that stuff just doesn't go well in modern zombie movies.

now, if there were a movie about a coven of witches or something in like the 1800's that cast a hex on a cemetery so zombies attacked the town or something, that'd be cool, but it's period-dependant, that wouldn't make any sense if it was modern day new york and it's like oh man zombies, but also witches and magic are real too

My guess is that studios feel, because of the societal shift toward atheism, that people have more difficulty suspending disbelief for supernatural zombies.

You know, because people were totally expecting the scientific zombie apocalypse to be an actual thing.
