They both simultaneously hated each other, but they also both respected each other's intelligence. In the end, you almost get the feeling that Tywin was proud of Tyrion killing him, though he clearly didn't want to admit it.

I think I got a lot out of the scene where both of them dominate Jeffrey at the dinner table. Tywin lets Tyrion speak and not hold back. Then Tywin basically continues Tyrion's position.

I more got the impression that, as he was dying, Tywin thought, "I got clapped by this bum ass..."

I never understood why Tywin liked Arya so much. It was basically counter to his nature.

The Tywin/Arya thing didnt happen in the books, which might be why that seems off to you. Havent watched the show myself to compare.

Tywin fits the Magnificent Bastard archetype pretty much from start to finish.

It made no sense. Tywin knew one of the Stark girls was missing and he has a noble born girl, about the same age, posing as a commoner. Its honestly ridiculous that he never put it together

Honestly, I've watched the scene again, and I still think Tywin did come to respect him. I don't know if he's capable of feeling love, but there's just a tinge of pride in how Tyrion turned out. When he tells him he respects how Tyrion refuses to die, and then ads that Tyrion is a Lannister, and his son. I don't know if he said that out of fear, but you can't help but feel like there's just that little bit of pride there.

The fascinating thing about their relationship is that Tyrion is Tywin in every way that matters and Tywin still hates him. His other children are essentially failures and possibly (I don't believe this to be the case personally but it is possible IIRC) not even his, but he prefers them.
