Remember when one of the speech writers for Rand Paul plagiarized the wikipedia synopsis of the movie Gattaca and he said that it couldn't be plagiarism because he never claimed to have written the script for the movie itself and then threatened to quit politics for getting criticized about it.

I actually think this action says a whole lot more about what's going on behind the scenes than anything Trump has done.

They know so much more than they're letting on and the fact that they're still proudly flaunting their corruption shows how much power they hold.

It's obviously cheap opportunism on Rand Paul's part here, but he's right about the law's history. It was used against Eugene Debs in WWI, and the NYT for publishing the Pentagon Papers during Vietnam. It's not great!

Maybe he shouldn't have voted to expand it several years ago, then

The government's definition of "espionage" has historically included "opposing US involvement in WWI" and "revealing that they were lying about US involvement in Vietnam."

I'm going to go ahead and say selling nuclear secrets to foreign countries counts as espionage

I would consider that espionage. OTOH, maybe if the government had been truthful about how bad things were in Vietnam.....

Clearly that's a problem with the law and not the people enforcing it.

Is there some other entity you expect to be enforcing the law going forward?

We're done discussing the merits of the Espionage Act. The only reason it's being questioned is because Trump is in trouble. Full stop.

The people who prosecuted Eugene Debs are dead. They're not a concern anymore.

They were probably dead when Daniel Ellsberg was prosecuted, and his prosecutors were probably dead at the time of Edward Snowden.

Ellsberg had all his charges dismissed a few months after he was charged. They would later pass the whistleblower protection act to prevent something like that again that should have protected Snowden.

It's extraordinarily concerning that this is the GOP's response to the very real threat of state nuclear secrets being compromised.

Oh it's concerning but certainly not surprising in the least. They ceased having any interest in actual governance around the time Obama got elected. Their entire ideology is "fuck the dems, anything they want we oppose". It's that simple. They are the greatest threat to this country, and have been since the fucking business plot against Roosevelt over the new deal.
