1) everyone always talks about how broken psychic type was, and yeah its pretty fucking strong, but NORMAL is on a whole new level. every single fucking team has tauros + chansey + snorlax. theyre basically the price of admission. if you dont use them, youre going to get fisted by someone who is. i saw someone make a joke about if gen 1 is played perfectly, the winner of the battle is decided by who wins the tauros speed tie and they really werent lying. that thing is horrendously powerful, its fast, and it can take hits like a champ too.

2) compared to other metas ive dabbled in, this one actually feels less luck dependent. which probably sounds stupid if you know how much RNG gen 1 has. but the thing is because the meta is dominated by normal and psychic types, theres very little prediction going on. in modern competitive pokmon the whole game revolves around guessing what your opponent will switch to and trying to punish it, and thats part skill yeah, to understand why and when someone would swap pokmon. but a lot of it is luck. gen 1 is all about positioning the battle for your tauros to clean up the enemies weakened pokmon and positioning the battle so their tauros cant clean up your weakened pokemon. not making predictions.

3) fuck wrap/bind/clamp/fire spin LOL. not because theyre too strong [although they are decently powerful], but because its so annoying to have to keep clicking your move knowing it wont go off because youre trapped.

4) i keep trying to make pinsir work because its fucking cool and one of the few pokmon that learns swords dance. but it really struggles. it has abysmal coverage. no bug type moves of course, but its entire move pool is normal except for a single fighting move, submission, which is fucking terrible. 80% accuracy and 50% recoil. yuck. plus pinsir dies to special attacks so easily

5) i think slowbro and exeggutor are underrated as hell, i honestly feel like they outperform even alakazam.

I love the old sprites man

Watching gen 1 solo challenges have given me new perspectives on a lot of Pokemon

Normal is super good in gen 1 since its only weakness, fighting, has dog shit moves

Poison and Bug have awful moves

mewtwo is banned and golem has fallen out of favour

pretty much yeah although i think people have decided having a ground/rock type isnt necessary. but when i do see a ground/rock type its usually rhydon, not golem

The last competitive Gen 1 team I remember having was... hmm...

Snorlax, Exeggutor, Tauros, Starmie, Alakazam, and Zapdos I think?

Yeah, it's not just that. It's that Fighting Type has no good moves in Gen 1. Outside of High Jump Kick, which was exclusive to Hitmonlee (a pokemon with the durability of tissue paper: it had 35 base Special in Gen 1, to go with 50 base HP and 53 base defense. A stiff breeze could kill this thing!), the strongest Fighting type attack was Submission, as detailed - an extremely shitty move. HJK only had 85 BP in Gens 1-3 and has always had 90 accuracy with the incredibly punishing unique recoil on a miss, so it's not like it was that much better.

Toxic and leech seed are a GREAT combo.

Eggy is conditionally the 4th best pokemon. Used to be pretty cleanly the 4th best, basically always going 2-for-1 with Sleep Powder + Boom.
Slowbro is a bit on the weaker end of good. Great at baiting Starmie or Zam into Twave, but fodder for Jolteon and Zapdos. Really depends on the viability of other pokemon.

Gen 1 is really fun because you know to an extent what is going to happen. Some of it is a coin flip prediction, particularly booms, some of it is pure luck, freezes and Sing. But there's a limited pool of threats and you can try to build your team to beat what's immediately popular.

Whats the level range you play at and how do you make it even? I dont think your using carts for this. XD Just curious. I dont have the wherewithal to do competitive but this seems like a lot of fun.

Fighting moves also are totally ass.

Submission has like...80 power with 80 accuracy IIRC and recoil damage.

Every other fighting move is straight up unusable trash...I guess high jump kick is passable but it's only on a worthless mon(Hitmonlee) who was insanely trash back then. Double kick is on okay desperation move on Jolteon but if your using it things probably aren't going well and you will be praying for critical.

Literally nothing over 85 power and everything vaguely strong had recoil and bad accuracy.

Speed is directly related to crit chance in Gen 1. Persian is fucking deadly, just doesn't have AS MUCH power as other Normal types.

exactly, yeah :P
its move pool is very shallow, but it throws off extremely quick and powerful thunderbolts, and sometimes thats all you need
and i picked Gyarados because it synergizes really well with Jolteon. they perform well vs each others counters imo
