Palpatine was the schemer in the end but Vader is the first villain you'll see in the series, kills the mentor character, has Han frozen in carbonite, dumpsters Luke in their first fight, saws his hand off and does the father reveal. Has a much more distinct appearance, was the top red lightsaber guy for a while, had the voice. He has a distinct look, and the MCU is so culturally pervasive that even people who aren't interested in the movies would recognize him on-sight as a villain of considerable significance.
