i know the default pokemon challenge is nuzlocke, and i do think theyre cool and have enjoyed reading nuzlocke comics/watching lets plays, but i doubt id enjoy playing one myself. id dislike having to restart a lot and the perma death aspect is also saddening

i recently finished a ground type only run in pokmon platinum and it was awesome, a lot of fights required a lot of strategizing. unfortunately my second favourite type is ice which afaik no game would really support an ice type only run because ice types are usually saved for the late game.

Wouldn't it be something if they just added hard and very hard modes

You could try a difficulty hack

I'm pretty sure by now one exists for every mainline game, even the GameCube games

Egg challenge. Post on the trade boards you want six random eggs and see who gives you one and only use those six Pokmon.

ROM hacks. Drayano makes really well balanced ones.

maybe ill just suck it up and do a nuzlocke. who knows, maybe ill end up liking them.

im definitely most comfortable with/used to platinum but i just beat it so im not really in the mood to play it again.

leaf green is probably the game im most used to after the sinnoh games. im mostly thinking about leaf green or soul silver. or maybe white 2....

Solo challenges are fun.

As much as people say "lol just use your starter to stomp the game," it can be incredibly fun to see exactly what roadblocks hold up given pokemon, and finding ways around them.

Take omanyte. Stomp Brock, mt moon, nugget bridge, maybe even misty if you're lucky. But a random lass with two oddosh that only know absorb? while your only move is likely water gun? Damn near the final boss of the game, right there. What's your plan? Bide? Struggle? how do you even burn enough pp to GET struggle, while having enough hp left?

I second the egg run. Maybe ask for one specific egg, and have the rest be random if you want just a tiny but of semblance of control for it.

TBH, I don't think typical Nuzlocke runs are "hard". The solution to almost any problem is "grind more" or "spam items." The best Pokemon difficulty hacks/challenges restrict leveling and items, death is expected.

Minimum battles.

I played like 25 hours of Pokmon Insurgence so far and its hard as fuck for a Pokmon game. Well, the 2nd gym was easy cause I looked at a guide but the first gym leader took me like 10 tries, and Ive lost to a couple regular trainers

no healing (includes items and pokemon centers)

I'm a big fan of Egglocke runs. Get 6 eggs from randoms on the internet ASAP ( the Pokemon Trading social boards here on Gamefaqs are generally pretty good about giving away random eggs if you ask) and whatever hatches is your team. That's the entire challenge. You're allowed to use an HM Friend if needed. Last time I had an Alolan Vulpix, Dunsparce, Bidoof, Zoara, Rockruff, and Mudbray for an Egglocke run thru Sun

Either do rom hacks or make up your own rules. The Pokemon randomizer can adjust trainer levels and just do no item/set battle rules and softcap the level your Pokemon can get.

If you have Sword or Shield I can hook it up with an egg. Ill give you a good one.

Random eggs and each pokemon is a different type or different type combination from the rest.

Could just do something like a soft nuzlocke where you box them if they die, only able to take one out of purgatory whenever you pass particular milestone points you set for yourself.

The thing you described is why hardcore nuzlockes exist. No items in battle, battles are on set instead of switch, you can't overlevel the next leader's ace at all (super annoying in Sinnoh since Wake and Maylene have the same level ace), no stat boosting moves (bulk up OP since defense is the most commonly used defensive stat in the main game), and no degenerate strategies like toxic and protect.

Sword and Shield are ice friendly due to the Wild Area. You can find ice types after the first gym.

Mono type runs are really fun, been playing through Altered Emerald with just normal types and god damn does gen 3 have some great normal pokemon

Beat the game with a party of 6 Wobbuffet.
