Isn't the event in June? South Africa covid cases are already plummeting, the US will soon follow.

Just like they were supposed to drop last year, right?

TBH this changes nothing to me or 99% or anyone interested in E3, we've always watched streams or pre recorded videos or articles online, and attendance has always mostly been journalists only.

So I don't care either way.

I don't remember, was E3 in person last year, or still only online? If I recall, the online-only E3 actually was a pretty decent layout. Direct after direct.

That said, E3 has been extremely underwhelming this past decade or so. The magic and fun surprises seem to be gone.

They need to start planning stuff now. It's not worth the risk planning for an in-person event and cancelling it later. They're probably bleeding money enough as is.

It has been online only since 2020. Actually wait I think 2020 was a complete cancel and companies did their own thing.

Makes sense for needing to plan ahead, but why are they cancelling it? We are having 100,000 people gather next week for the College Football National Championship, no way more people go to E3, do they?

Yeah, E3 2020 was cancelled completely due to Covid and E3 2021 was online only. So this isn't surprising that they're sticking with online only, since Covid is still going.

Is that an outdoor event? E3 is in a convention center.

It also depends on the demands of the companies and attendees.

I'm in two minds about how I feel about this.

On the one hand, I've really missed the crowd reactions, the inexplicable celebrity guests, or the batshit insanity of things like Microsoft showing off a car onstage, RIIIIIDGE RACER etc. The online nature of the Post-Covid E3 has definitely lacked that enthusiastic-but-vaguely-unhinged charm that makes E3 feel special.

That said, with it being all digital I feel like I've seen more of the games than I usually would. Things that would normally only be on the expo floor rather than in presentations - and so at best may have had a line or two in the "best if the rest" bits of news roundups - have ended up being in the smaller live presentations on YouTube: it's felt like there's a lot more to watch in a digital E3, which has got to be a good thing.

Nope. In person attendance was usually around 50k to 60k for E3. It's just easier to watch the big announcements online.

E3 Can die if it wants, some other gaming event down the line will take its place eventually. The market for gaming tournaments hasn't changed to my knowledge so it won't really matter in the long run.

I think the future is probably just publishers doing their own expo shows. Ubisoft did some back in 2019.

No big announcements or anything. Just a way to get the public to demo their games and give in-person feedback.

That's basically the only thing that can't be offered online now.

Pretty sure for a good while (like almost a decade) twitch/streaming has been how most people experience E3
