Not that it's much better, but apparently this only applies to the smartphone app and not the key fob. Toyota lets you start vehicles like the RAV 4 PHEV remotely in two ways. One is over WiFi/LTE using its Remote Connect apps that cost $8 per month or $80 per year. Honestly, if companies push any harder with these kinds of software restrictions it's only a matter of time until software piracy makes its way to cars with the same ease it has made its way to consoles.
