1 thousand years in the future, far right extremist theocracy has taken over the entire earth. All humans are required to belong to the One World Church. World leader is a combination President-Pope

Rejection of the church brings execution. Its this type of society which ends up making the first manned trips to other solar systems. Where eventually they encounter another civilization. The aliens are even more technologically advanced. And very peaceful and liberal. When the humans attempt to preach their religion, the aliens inform them that their ancestors already made direct contact with God thousands of years ago through a technology that breached the fabric of reality to reach a higher plane of existence. They found God, talked to him, decided he was a threat to their society and destroyed him

I could see this as maybe an episode of Black Mirror or another reboot of Twilight Zone or Outer Limits
