In China, it's illegal for any fiction media to depict any kind of time travel. So no Chinese home grown stories can use time travel, and any foreign stuff that does, is banned inside China

I learned this factoid years ago. But I am no closer to understanding the logic behind it

maybe depiction of a post-apocalyptic china is a no no or something like western media's futuristic nightmare of russian/korean invasion (was there ever a movie where china's the big bad guy)

It's because people are supposed to appreciate the glorious communist society they live in instead of waxing nostalgic for earlier time periods which weren't as good.

Avengers: Endgame made $600 million in China

Spoilers but Endgame's core story revolves around time travel and is in fact a work of fiction

From what I understand, the only kind of time travel that's banned is time travel to actual historical events. They cite it as being "disrespectful" to the past events. Which makes sense since they also have a thing against zombies and skeletons for being disrespectful.

If it's a fictional world with time travel to fictional events, they're fine with that. It's just don't travel back to real events, and ESPECIALLY don't travel back to see any Chinese historical people, that one will be a quick ban.

iirc, it's because they don't want anyone to make anything set before the Cultural Revolution and imply that times were better then or something like that.

There are tons of programs sent in the past. However they do have rules restricting how things must be portrayed and even some very popular shows have been cancelled for failing to adhere to them.

As for the time travel thing. I don't know how true that is. It is true Back to the Future was originally banned, but later it aired on TV in China (my wife literally watched it on TV in China in the 90s). I think this is one of those things where there is nuance missing. Like when people say Winnie the Pooh is banned, when it's just comparisons to Xi that are banned (or insulting Xi period).
