A former mixed martial arts fighter who pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was sentenced Wednesday to 41 months in prison. Federal prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 44 months.

Scott Fairlamb, 44, of New Jersey, is the first person sentenced for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the Capitol riot, and his sentence is the longest a rioter has received. The judges sentencing decision is considered a canary in the coal mine indicator of what punishment dozens of other rioters could receive for acts of violence.

I mean big sentences have never been given out for rioting aside from like that one white chick who threw molotovs at a couple of cops in their car in 2020. iirc, most blm rioters that get picked up are either released the next day, or given short sentences.

Personally I take a "hard on crime" approach when it comes to it. The insurrectionists should have been branded as traitors and given the death penalty, and the rioters at the BLM protests should have been given much stiffer sentences than what they got.
