In our environment, we have two data centers that every location connects to. We're rolling out SD-WAN to multiple locations to improve redundancy and decrease downtime. We have two circuits through provider A, and 1 circuit through provider B. We're relying on BGP routing, so there is sometimes a short period of no connectivity while BGP converges to the next available path.

Path priority:
  • Provider 1 path 1
  • Provider 1 path 2
  • Provider 2 path 1
  • Provider 2 path 2

If the 1st path goes down, traffic moves to the 2nd path. If the 1st and 2nd paths are down, the traffic moves to the 3rd path, and so on.

With SD-WAN, we're using provider 1 path 1 and provider 2 path 1 at the same time. In the song, they raise both hands in the air to one side when they yell "HEY!" and then they move them to the other side when they yell "HO!" In this scenario, HEY! is the primary path and HO! is only used when HEY! doesn't work.

SD-WAN path priority:
  • Provider 1 path 1 AND Provider 2 path 1
  • Provider 1 path 2 AND Provider 2 path 2

With SD-WAN, the remote locations don't even feel any outages when the 1st path goes down.
