The legendary rock band confirmed the 1971 song will no longer feature on their tour setlist due to the controversial lyrics about slavery.
Lyrics on the track include: Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields / Sold in the market down in New Orleans / Skydog slaver knows hes doin all right / Hear him whip the women just around midnight.
Brown Sugar is one of the Rolling Stones most popular songs on tour and Piers is dumbfounded as to why the band have listened to the criticism.

I can bring up an article showing that the lyrics are not "racist" as Rolling Stones has been against racism and in fact the lyrics were in protest to racism, but the decision to retire the song is because the language of the song, as language often does, age and today no longer represents the same thing it did 50 or so years ago. It's more of an homage to the blues that they've been using over the years to the people they borrowed it from (appropriated)

I think the song hits all of these notes mentioned in the article & in this thread.

Among them is a story of a slaver assaulting slaves. That right there makes me uncomfortable.

Like, some of Roger Waterss music...... I love it..... but I wont play stuff like Not Now John out of context. Thats a good example. It makes me uncomfortable. It has made other people uncomfortable in the past. The good reactions are never *that* good. Its not worth. People misconstrue the meaning & miss the subtlety & get offended. Other songs do the same thing without being extra controversial about it.

Whats really the reason for playing it? Is there nothing better? Is there a point? Are people having fun? Am I having fun? Is this good, etc? But yea, I have to wonder.... is a sense of irony & theater being lost on the upcoming generation somehow?

Playing the bad guy in blues is the tradition. Stagolee. Devil Went Down To Georgia. All Along The Watchtower. You name it. Dialogue with self. Got an angel on my shoulder, and a devil at my feet. Sort of stuff. That being said.........

They were very rarely serious, and

context. Back in the day There were also certain almost universally accepted depictions & social stances & standards which would just not be acceptable today by any standard whatsoever. For me, and Im sure many others, this song agitates that still-sensitive wound. That being said, I dont think The Stones were painting the slavery in that song in a positive light here or kept playing it to offend anyone, and its quite the opposite. But, like, the cats out of the bag on the multiple meanings of the song...... and I dont think people enjoy listening to it as much anymore. I certainly dont.

When i I first heard it, I knew there might be something too far about the lyrics. After awhile, some discussion, some digging, and listening to the song, I was able to come to most of these conclusions & found little value in listening to it further...... let alone the discomfort I just described. It took years to get to that point, but Im way done with that song. Play some Beast of Burden & You Cant Always Get What You Want & Sympathy For The Devil instead.
