https://www.fox5dc.com/news/a-year-after-getting-covid-19-virginia-gov-ralph-northam-still-doesnt-have-sense-of-smell-taste

Both the Governor and his wife, Pam Northam, tested positive for COVID-19 in September 2020 after developing symptoms.
Northam said that he still is without his sense of smell and taste a year later. "We still have some lasting symptoms. I'm just fortunate that nothing worse happened."

I'm not sure how I would handle it if I just couldn't taste or smell anything forever. When I did lose my senses of taste and smell, it was weird AF.
  • Couldn't taste hot sauce. My sinuses would still react like I was eating hot sauce, though
  • Pineapples tasted like crunchy water
  • Eggs tasted like nothing
  • Bacon tasted like nothing
  • Lemonade tasted like nothing
  • Grapefruit tasted like nothing

Ive had that before, major health issues not Covid.

Lasted a few months.

Sucked total ass.

I hated eating meat the most.

Was just so wrong without any flavor.

Old news. We already knew Northam didn't have any taste when he thought about doing the Moonwalk on the presser regarding his black face.

My girlfriend got it around Thanksgiving of last year. I think it was July when she finally said things are starting to smell normal. Before, she said everything like her shampoo and my cologne had this same weird chemical smell to it.

There are pretty big consequences of not being able to taste or smell, actually

There are several fields of work where this is very very detrimental.

Such as a chef, A Researcher(Oh you cant smell the invisible but toxic/flammable gas leaking? R.I.P) perfume maker etc. You cant test your own products appeal at all and out yourself at a higher risk of injury or death.

Or the general inability to detect certain chemicals/gasses, increased likelihood of consuming food that has gone bad, not noticing certain kinda of chemical/gas leaks not smelling warning signs of certain conditions/infestations or even worse a fire. Imagine not smelling the smoke from burning food and completely losing your dinner or worse from a fire and losing precious time you couldve used to escape or put on the blaze.

Or the lack of pleasure from eating. Sure maybe you lose weight but you also may gain depression.

We have senses for a reason. Losing a sense is not a good thing. Its deeply distressing and limits what you can do. Long term or permanent either way.

No you can't

You know how dangerous that is? One fuck up and the guy is dead or in the ER. From rotten or undercooked food to a gas leak to anything.

He has no idea what he's putting in his body. How the fuck is that beneficial

You can eat food that smell terrible like kimchee and sauerkraut.

Check expiration date of food before eating it to avoid rotten food.

People could just a use a meat thermometer which they should already been doing to begin with unless they cook sous vide. Also with sous vide, you can never under cook because it will pasteurize the food.

Gas and smoke detectors exist. People could also listen to hissing noise to check for gas leak.

You can also go outside for a walk and not be bothered by whatever smells you may find disgusting like cigarette smoke or urine. Both of these are a major issue where I live.

Its not that bad tbh. Beats losing eye sight which is actually dangerous.

Gas and smoke detectors don't exist in cars, though. When a car catches on fire, it's often the burning smell you notice first that tells you there's a problem that needs to be addressed.

I can't believe that someone in here is actually trying to argue that losing your smell and taste is actually beneficial.

We evolved and maintained both of those senses for a reason.

Smell and taste can be retrained.

We aren't even 100% sure why covid causes loss of taste and smell, but the thinking right now is that it causes damage to the cells that assist olfactory neurons.

I'm not so sure that we can be confident that we can "retrain" smell and taste in the face of cell damage, depending on the extent of it. Especially when we don't fully understand it yet.
