TLDR - Whenever I clean Socks and Oreo's cage, I have to take out the bottom plastic layer to wash it, and usually the rats use that as an opportunity to crawl out the bottom of the cage and go exploring. At first I thought about stopping them from doing it, but I quickly realized that every time they did that, they made no attempt to hide or run away when it came time to put them back in, so with a sort of mutual trust I just let them free-roam during cage cleanings. They always come when I call for them, consistently.

Zoom to last week. I got strep bronchitis (COVID negative, thankfully) but I was pretty sick. I went to the pharmacy to get my antibiotics, and my wife cleaned their cage while I was away. When I got back, I noticed only Socks was in her cage. My wife noted that she "looked everywhere" for Oreo but that "she ran away and won't come." So I call for her - no Socks anywhere.

As an aside, rats are unique amongst most animals in that they actively try to nurse each other back to health if they're sick (instead of abandoning them). Likewise, they instinctually try to suck out mucous from each other's noses when they are congested because rats can't breathe through their mouths and will suffocate if their noses aren't clear. I noticed the day before that Oreo kept looking in each of my nostrils, probably because she heard the sniffles and smelled the strep (which is noticeable even to humans).

So I go to my bed and lift the pillow, and Oreo was sleeping under it, looking extremely sad. I have no idea how she even managed to get onto the bed (she must've jumped between several pieces of furniture). She looked up, saw me, then started wildly bouncing around, bruxing (chattering her teeth, basically a way they show happiness) and boggling her eyes (only happens when they brux very strongly).

It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen from an animal. She literally spent hours under my pillow worried about me T_T

That made my Friday! Did your nephew ever convince his parents to let him get one?

It's wild that they're so compassionate and empathetic.
