I do miss being fascinated by things. Now it's like, "I've seen this plot in 100 permutations already"
"this gimmick mechanic was done better in 1998"
"i remember this specific phenotypical construct of tits from december 2008"
"this salmon sushi is 8.2% less fatty than in the other place"

I still have a lot of fun with Pokemon.

I play the battle simulator a lot, and I still play gens 2-5 regularly. If you want a game that feels new but also retains that Gamefreak feel, you may get some mileage out of Romhacks. My personal favorite, Gaia, feels like it came straight from Gamefreak themselves. New original region that feels organic, while also not at all absurd or unfair. Original storyline to match.

https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=326118

Alternatively, if you want to play a main game but want something a little more challenging, you could always try and enhancement hack, like Radical Red:

https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=437688

Which changes all kinds of stuff, while keeping mostly true to the main experience. New Pokemon, Megas, a much harder difficulty, more Pokemon availability, changes to buff a lot of pokemon, etc. (Such as added typings and abilities, such as giving Typhlosion priority fire moves, a secondary dark typing for Luxray, and so on)

Lastly, if you want a game that's pokemon adjacent, but it's a brand new spin on Gen 3, you could play a very well made game where you rise through the ranks of Team Rocket:

https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=360725

It's a big more edgy than the previous two, but it also borrows concepts from the adventures manga and makes going through Kanto for the millionth time feel very fresh.

Hope this helps.

No worries :) I'm always down to spread the good gospel of (well-made) pokemon hacks.

I mean this
https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/

It's a website that lets you build your own teams whenever you want and battle other people. Now, the main tiering system they use is unique to the people that run the site,
https://www.smogon.com/

But, that said, you don't have to play by their rules specifically, as they have the official game types used by Gamefreak, namely Battle Spot singles and VGC.

I love this site, and I've used it since like, 2012 almost to play G5 battles. I'm not great it at, but I expect if you feel like battling people, this is a fine place to do it.

It can be annoying, but there are ways around the 1 per turn rule. Thats why despite the collectable nature of Charizard cards, theyre honestly useless as far as actually playing the game because discarding energy after one attack is bad.

All this guy does is use gimmick teams to beat brainless and toxic players. Extremely cathartic.

Sword was the first one I ever played, it was a gift or I likely would have never played a Pokemon game before. My wife's brother bought me and my wife both a Switch and Pokemon for Christmas in 2019. He really did it because he wanted more family time, we are wide spread across TN, GA, all the way up to Ohio, so the online raids let us get online and play together while Duoing with the nephews and whatnot.

like 300 hours later, it's addictive. The multiplayer den raids and the adventure den can burn hours away without even thinking about it. I didn't think it would be a game i'd ever like but apparently I dig it.

Yeah. Just hadn't been the same after it went full 3D. Though part of it may just be getting old.

Broke my teeth on gen 2(Shocker), and I think the series peaked at Black and White 2. Though HG/SS is also fantastic.

You ever play Colosseum or XD?

Sword and Shield are definitely the best 3D game since X&Y. USUM/SM are absolutely murdered by their glacial pacing and lack of player agency, I almost couldn't even finish the Ultra version because the first 20 hours was exactly the same game, sans a few new cutscenes. The Raid Dens are addicting and the DLC is actually quite solid, even under the pretense of "selling you more Pokemon."

I've never been a huge fan of the remakes, even though Crystal is like, one of my top favorites, behind BW1 and Emerald.

I agree with the Gen 5 peak, although I'm a fan of BW over BW2, although I acknowledge that 2 is the technically superior game.
