Why are we heading back to the moon first? Was the moon landing fake? Is that why we or anyone else hasn't yet?

Is it even possible to live on the moon for an extended period of time without permanently fucking up your muscles and skeleton?

no. but the same holds pretty true for mars too. we're not meant to live anywhere else but earth, doesn't mean we wont do it eventually.

Probably less so than some zero-G orbital station, where people have stayed for about a year.

The bigger problem is that the moon is essentially made of asbestos.

Yeah, I suppose the idea of a colony to me implies that people would be there on an extended period of time in way that most our space expeditions aren't.

A futuristic resort on the moon where you could experience the low gravity would be pretty cool.

and mars is full of perchlorates in the soil

no non-earth planet is going to lack in hazards. trick will be figuring out how to use them.

Earth itself doesn't really have a great safety record either.

This is a rather simple minded thing to say in comparison to Mars and the moon

In a less shitty way than hitokiri puts it: It has the best safety record, because otherwise we wouldn't have made it this far, or at all. Just hosting life is putting Earth's safety in the top .0000000000000000000001% percentile.

Astronauts would be cycled in and out, same as at a space station. They'd go there for a month to work, then return to Earth just as the next batch arrive.

The usual ISS stay is about 6 months, at least the Moon has a bit more gravity to it.
