In the end, we're all human with a core that we build off in a world we can have similar experiences that shape us. If you can dig into yourself and find out why you tick the way you do, why would that information not be useful to apply when observing others behavior? I think of it as learning from the inside outward.
I think the key is just not feeling over confident in projection. Project, but keep your mind open to other possibilities at the same time. Keep the possibility in mind that maybe you are just trying to normalize yourself amongst others to feel more comfortable with yourself.
