The poster alone is a pretty good indication of how bloated the movie is:



all stuffed within a a 92~ minute runtime.

the official runtime on imdb is apparently 1 hour and 47 minutes/107 minutes but just like wandavision episodes showed like 50~ minute runtimes on the episodes themselves, there was a long list of credits to go with them xd.

fun movie but man did it need some serious fleshing out either by extending the length or cut down the amount of characters and locations you barely get to know, recognize or remember much of when the movie is over.

I think the near two-hour runtime includes the Us Again short which preceded the movie.

Anyway, I would have cut the con baby from the plot. I know she's precious (and Pixar loves their baby characters), but she's a non-essential character. The chase to get the shard back from the monkeys would have worked better as a standalone action sequence rather than an introduction to more supporting characters.

And the surrogate parent-child relationship could have been between the viking and the boy who captains the boat.

I think making it a musical could have helped. You can fit a lot into a song in a short period of time.

The villain isn't given enough time. You see her once as a kid for less than a day, and then just a few times as an adult.

It's just easy to lose track of her with how busy the film was. Like, I forgot Fang having monster cats was even a thing until I saw that busy-ass poster.

If they wanted all these characters in it, either they should've given it a longer run time or make it a television series. I honestly think it would've worked better as a television show like AtLA, where you're given more time to flesh out the characters. So yeah the movie had a serious pacing issue because of it. I really wanted to know the lands and settings better as well because the movie did a good job setting the world building.

That sounds about right but it's not enough to just see her chasing Raya a bunch. They needed to show us more about her character than just showing her chasing Raya as an adult.

The first time the movie really shows her perspective in a way that lets us empathize with her is when we see her city, where her mother pressures her to betray Raya, which is probably about 75% of the way into the movie. The movie acts like Raya has a deep history with her, but really there isn't much to their relationship.

Her mother seems to be the real problem tbh. She seemed to be the one was sowing distrust in her daughter most of all, guiding her to steal the orb as a kid and to kill the dragon as an adult.

I think it'd've been more interesting to show more of that; it'd make her actions more understandable knowing her mother is driving her, and we could empathize with her more. Instead they just portray her as a selfish thief who's just messing things up needlessly for most of the story.
