I just picked it up after 4 months. Game is still such a massive step back from New Leaf that I'm still astounded that people say it is the best.

I haven't been able to go back since June. I poured like 400 hours into the game and never wanted to take a day off because I knew it'd be the end

Going back and seeing the people I abandoned is too much. And my online friends will want to hang out too and I don't want them to see my bum ass basic island

Its my first and only AC.

That's fine, it isn't a bad game per se. It just took out a ton from New Leaf in favor of this island decoration stuff. Like, why can the shop only be upgraded once? The others you could upgrade it 4 - 5 times for more and more furniture. Where's the coffee shop? The comedy club? The shoe store? New Leaf had a fun city block to get upgraded but New Horizons more or less stops after you can terraform your island. "Go have fun" despite having nothing at all to really do other than make your island look cool but not actually be fun to play in. And the lack of furniture is appalling. I still don't have a damn dining room table, though I got an ice one from the snow man yesterday. It feels like the characters barely say anything of note, rarely interact with you or invite you over their houses, never give you little quests like delivering stuff to people or getting a particular bug / fish. The competitions are a huge step backwards as well.

I dunno, it just feels like they went in the wrong direction in favor of this update-as-we-go style.

I miss the quests you could do for villagers to get items. They still have it, but you can't select an option just for that and you have to find an item hidden on your island instead of just being handed the item.

Yeah I've had that happen a handful of times, it was just nicer to feel a bit more connected to them when you asked if they had any tasks to do because you could go on a little quest trail of talking to people to find out who has it. It's small, but it gave them more personality. It feels like every animal just exists and barely interacts with anything. The entire game seems like it's solely set up to go "go make your island look super neat!" and nothing else. No real sense of "growing" your island, as everything you do from that point on is just window dressing. No one else moves in, no new buildings to place, no new functionality. It's a shame. Maybe future updates will fix that but I sincerely doubt it.

I hope so. It's like you said, there should be more than one shop upgrade. If I had played that far when it originally came out in the spring, I would have thought that the shop upgrades were just going to be released later. Now we're closing in on one year out, and there's no more upgrades?

Tbh that sounds like stuff they'll probably do in a sequel. I wouldn't be surprised if most of development was getting the island customization and crafting mechanics to work. But I would guess this will be the new paradigm for the next game.

I just hope they won't put so many fucking seasonal recipes in balloons next game.

I'm playing it again now as my daughter got the game for Christmas, I'm happy that my favourite villager Sherb is still there and I'm having fun running around in a mermaid dress. It's a step back from New Leaf but some aspects I like more.

It's because New Horizons brought a LOT of new fans into the mix thanks to COVID. They don't know any better.
