Ya I don't do that either never had to.
The best reason I've heard for doing that is it raises the boiling point of water, thus making the past cook more quickly.

But I never considered cooking pasta to be truly time consuming.
As it is the sauce should be simmering anyway.

I only put a pinch in my pasta water and can definitely tell a difference. Maybe I have sensitive taste buds, or yours aren't working right.

For fresh-made pasta and veggies this works, but you want to go a bit easier on dry pasta or anything thats going to absorb a lot of the water.
