Yeah, Plastic Love is soooo overplayed. I mean there are two certainties in every city pop playlist: Plastic Love & Lum Invader clips.

From what (little) I've heard of the genre, it's like a mix of mellow disco with jazz and synthpop influences.

Now this is my kind of topic.

Yoshiko Sai and Hako Yamazaki are also both incredible singers I highly recommend, albeit not as poppy and a bit more on the jazzy side.

i was gonna say cinderella express by yumi matsutoya; bothers me that a ton of her music isn't on youtube though

epo's entire rca-era discography has been licensed by youtube recently, and it's all worth a listen. uwasa ni naritai and goodies are tied for her best record imo.

If you're into to that, you may be into my favorite new album this year. The standouts for me are number 5 and 10, listen to those, and I like number 2 as well. I enjoy the album all the way through which is rare for me:

Tatsuro Yamashita is seriously an amazing artist. Like most of his songs are bangers.

Ride on time is my favorite album of his too.

Did city pop have any sort of influence on anime or video games that your average turbonerd might recognize? The sound definitely sounds familiar.

@Shadowplay here is a video breaking down city pop's influence on Nintendo music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBNJ5cAxcQ8

These artists also did anime OPs in the 1980s, for example Miki Matsubara from Stay with Me did the OP for Gundam 0083 "The Winner"

At the time it was in fashion games were still pretty basic in terms of sound.

The closest I can think of might be Rad Racer
