These were my responses to Reddit posts re: the best films from each year. I kind of went more in-depth and discussed each year, and my opinions kind of pissed some people off. Whatever. I used Wikipedia's "horror by year," and kind of cross-referenced my Letterboxd when I could (since the Wiki didn't include EVERYTHING).

1990 - holy shit what a year. I've never seen Baby Blood, hardware, singapore sling, the suckling, or Exorcist III - but i know those are popular favorites. There's also childs play 2, basket case 2, a cat on the brain, bride of the reanimator, frankenhooker, nightbreed, and tales from the darkside. I'm going with the reflecting skin, though.
1991 - again, I've never seen 964 pinnochio or nekromantik 2 - but I'm sure they're considerations. Child's play 3 and the pit and the pendulum are major considerations. I also like silent night deadly night 5 and puppet master 2. I'm going with people under the stairs, though. Definitely not as strong as 1990.
1992 - amityville: it's about time, basket case 3, army if darkness, the burning moon, the lawnmower man, pet semetary 2, and stepfather 3 are considerations. I'm going with a tie between dead alive and candyman, though - it's too tough to choose between those two; they're both GOATs.
1993 - i feel like most people would say cronos. This year kinda sucked. Things, schramm, and canmibal the musical are the higher points? maybe leprechaun? I'm going return of the living dead 3, though - the best in that franchise. Sorry not sorry.
1994 - most people would say cemetary man i guess. Meh. I personally like my sweet satan. I guess I'm saying in the mouth of madness. This year suuuucked.
1995 - tales from the hood hands down. Leprechaun 3 right behind. Would most people say species or night of the scarecrow? Idk. This year sucked, too.
1996 - the craft is literally the only worthwhile film. Thinner or the dentist for laughs?
1997 - event horizon or the cube. Everything else kinda is subpar.
1998 - maybe ring or bride of chucky? I was scrunching my face so hard reading this. It's starting to reek real bad of late 90s/early 00s is the psycho remake alright? I like gus van sant.
1999 - audition. No fucking contest. Blair witch would've taken it away almost any other year. Two GOATs in a sea of turds and nu metal diarrhea (even if carrie 2 and stigmata are guilty pleasures)

2000 - ginger snaps is the best film of the year, even if i personally like leprechaun in the hood more. Drainiac is kinda a cool oddball choice.
2001 - dagon is the obvious answer, unless you like Lynch and/or count his films as horror - I'm a no on both. I'd probably pick trouble every day - it's like the only film i even like this year.
2002 - 28 days later or the ring are the obvious choices. I kinda like cabin fever more than both, and I'm not even a big Roth fan. I may honestly pick may, though?
2003 - high tension fucking eeeeasy. The only other film I'd consider, having not actually seen it, would be gozu. What am awful year.
2004 - The grudge is okay - i guess I'm picking that. Shaun of the dead is mad overrated.
2005 - the descent. There's nothing else I'd even consider. Eww.
2006 - not a single fucking movie. I guess Them? Isn't sheitan supposed to be decent, or am i thinking of something else?
2007 - inside, and nothing else comes even remotely close. These mid 00s are awful with just shitty final destination films and total garbage.
2008 - let the right one in is the ONLY right answer. Eden lake and martyrs are still great films, and dead girl is a guilty pleasure.
2009 - antichrist, with the loved ones as a close second and Jennifer's body at the third. I really do like cabin fever 2, coraline, drag me to hell, house of the devil, and the human centipede. Grotesque and melancholie der angel are two films i haven't seen that'd probably be in the running.
2011 - you're next. Easy. Human centipede 2 and the woman are the only other two i even like.
2012 - found is MY personal favorite, but it's definitely not the best and has lots of flaws. I feel like berberian sound studio is an obvious answer - but i wasnt a huge fan. I guess I'd go with the Maniac remake. Thanatamorphose is cool, even if flawed.
2013 - i fucking love the Demons Rook. I may say it just to be contrarian. Otherwise a shitty year. I guess people would say the conjuring - but ew. I guess the strange color of your body's tears is this year.
2014 - it follows. I'm not a fan of the babadook - but i can see it as a common answer; a girl walks home alone at night is an obvious answer, too. I also liked American Guinea pig: bouquet of guts and gore, as above so below, creep, eat, honeymoon, late phases, when animals dream, and wolfcop. Thought starry eyes was overrated.
2015 - the vvitch. I feel like this wiki list is missing films? It was missing darling - which is great, as well as American Guinea pig: bloodshock, i spit on your grave 3, knock knock, we are still here, and human centipede 3.
2016 - the love witch, with raw close behind. But what a great year? Antibirth, don't breathe, the eyes of my mother, and the neon demon are all fantastic.
2017 - get out. But creep 2 and the killing of a sacred deer are both good.
2018 - I've never seen climax - but I'm sure it's probably climax if it's not hereditary.
2019 - the lighthouse only SLIGHTLY beats midsommar. The house that jack built is a big hitter, too. US is also good.

Scream is whack as hell. It's not a poorly made film or anything - but I just don't think it's that memorable. Even as a deconstruction film, I'd much rather watch Funny Games or Man Bites Dog. I'd probably rather watch Dale vs. Tucker, or even Cabin in the Woods (of which I'm not a big fan at all, either).

Horror was dead in the 90's until Scream made it mainstream again for a while. "Not that memorable" what a fucking laugh riot.

well its your opinion so we cant tell you that you are wrong for picking craft (which isnt even horror until the last 20 minutes) over scream

but we can judge you for that especially your reasoning that a movie who completely changed the tone of every slasher movie that came after it not being memorable
slasher movies exist in a pre scream and post scream stat

tales from the hood fucked me up as a kid if i'm remembering the movie correctly.

ending the dude gets shot at the end and goes to hell. probably the first depiction of hell and satan that i've ever seen, and has stuck with me to this day.

the lighthouse is one of my favorite films period.

It was "dead" for just a few years in the mid '90s, and is that really something praiseworthy? Bringing something mainstream? Especially when what it "brought" was stuff like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legends? I mean, '97-'11 honestly don't look much better on paper for American films than '93-'96.

Tales from the Hood is way underrated with casuals. They think it's some sort of joke. It's honestly one of the most socially aware horror films and has something thought provoking to say with each story. Every single vignette in it is great, which is much more than could be said about most anthology films that have at least 1 stinker.

Nice to see the people under the stairs get a rep. One of the only movies that ever scared me as a kid, which is funny because it's practically horror comedy when rewatching as an adult

Dare I say, second best Craven film?

  1. Nightmare on Elm Street
  2. People Under the Stairs
  3. Last House on the Left
  4. New Nightmare
  5. The Serpent and the Rainbow
