I will be running 1E. My party has never played before except for 1 of them, who I DMed for years ago, 1 time.

I was thinking of running a pretty plotless descend deeper into this evil labyrinth type of thing to make it more about exploration and the story the players want instead of having it be on rails and about my ideas. Thoughts?

Knowing my buddies, the party will most likely be a two handed sword using warrior, a knife using thief and either a tank warrior or a tank cleric. Should I try to cater the encounters towards countering their full melee comp? Lots of ranged enemies, perhaps with big ogreish tanks to grapple the damage dealers while some little goblins or something pelt at them with crossbows? Or is that cheap?

Last question, should I make the traps genuinely hard? How lethal can they be without ruining the game?
