the appalachian mountains are about 400 million years older then the rockys. they stopped growing millions of years ago and have had a much longer time to weather and sink.

Well, they aren't really sinking. But yes, they are being weathered. Having said that, The Adirondacks were probably once some of the tallest in the world, including today. However, the Glaciers cut most of that away.
