Oh god that sounds like the worst thing ever. Calling it now, they quit before the 1st class trial.

Basically it's a murder mystery where a bunch of high school students are trapped in a school and forced to kill each other, inbetween the murders you're trying to find out why you're locked up and how to escape without killing anyone.

The first two are fucking awesome! V3 could've been awesome but the ending was fucking garbage.

The main series games are visual novels.
It's a "game" that is mostly reading from what I saw.
It has very little gameplay.

So far it does seem pretty fucking awful and cliche. I'd probably have abandoned it if I were playing it myself as just full off all the worst high school tropes.

Im working on V3 right now but only just starting chapter 2

The general premise was already explained. Theyre very anime/weeb (but fairly self aware about it)

The game is broken up into chapters, where each chapter has 3 parts. Theres an exploratory daily life beginning where more of the environment opens up to you and the characters look around hoping to learn more and find a way to escape their situation. You also have the opportunity to hang out with characters of your choice and go through dialogue with them and develop your relationship (kind of like Social Links in the Persona games). You get points that can be used to add skills in the later stage of each chapter

Eventually something bad happens and you go into the deadly life part where you investigate what happened and gather clues and accounts from other characters. After youve collected all the relevant information (you cant progress until you have everything you need), youll get called to the trial

The last part is a trial where you have gameplay involved, and there are various sequences where you use the appropriate clues/evidence to progress the trial (under a time limit). Many of these sequences do have twitch/action elements so it can be harder if you have slow reactions. The points you made due to developing your relationships can be allocated into skills that make these sequences easier (so those you have a hard time with, you can shore up with adding skills to them).

I've no idea if the whole game is like this, but the whole "14 year old child is the WORLD WIDE.." stuff I just find incredibly eye roll worthy.

The first game is about a bunch of high school students who get trapped in what they thought was a prestigious academy and are forced to play a game by a malicious and marketable teddy bear.

It's anime as fuck. The kicker of the school (Hope's Peak Academy) is that to get accepted you have to be the best at one particular thing. The "Ultimate" Whatever. This could be simple school-related qualities like the Ultimate Swimmer or the Ultimate Baseball Player, or weird esoteric stuff like the "Ultimate Affluent Progeny" or the "Ultimate Fanfic Creator". The main character is the "Ultimate Lucky Student" because he won a lottery to get accepted.

So every character is focused on two things: the ultimate whatever they are and essentially one character trait that annoyingly defines them throughout the game (asshole, easygoing, sweet, perverted, charming, fiery spirit, etc.)

The game's rules are that when a student is killed, there is a class trial in order to discover the murderer. If the murderer is correctly discovered, they are executed. If the wrong person is accused, everyone else is executed and the murderer gets to go free.

In the classroom trial, there's Phoenix Wright-like "point out the inconsistency" testimony stuff and there's also minigames that you do to discover things which range from "okay" to "supremely annoying".

If you don't mind visual novels that are anime as fuck, it can be interesting to learn some of the revelations that come out of the story, but honestly if you're going to go that route, I typically recommend Zero Escape over DR.

The whole ultimate theme, with the various school aged children (I presume at least?) being world wide renowned. Most feared gang leader, top fashionista etc. Just feels very anime to me and puts me off.

Oh that? Considering the various strange premises in video games, absolutely nothing puts me off. If I can accept something like Saint's Row IV, I can accept anything.

I can't speak for the 2nd or 3rd games but the 1st one is easily better than anything Phoenix Wright or Danganronpa has managed to come up with but I can understand not liking it if it's too hard for you.

I did like them though. But it takes a fairly straightforward sci-fi concept and runs away with it in a bad way, I cannot in good faith reccomend that series over Danganronpa, despite me hating V3's ending

They're good but if you're not already somewhat acclimated to "anime culture" (for lack of a better term) they will probably be offputtingly weird.

I've been watching it too since I watch just about any DR LP. One thing that's worried me is that the first 2 episodes are just learning about the school and meeting your classmates. If you're going in blind (playing or watching), it just seems like a regular visual novel in that your probably just going to be dating them and going on little school adventures, and that might turn people away. Next episode they're going to meet the antagonist and learn about the killing game, which is when the game picks up fast.

I love ZE and PW but I've yet to get into Danganronpa. I have a Vita tho. Also I snagged AI Somnium Files finally on steam for $28. I hope I like it, but I'm less open-minded these days. Getting old sucks.
