That's exactly what it is. Real actors in front of real cameras with effects added in post-production, just like that adaptation of A Scanner Darkly. Cool stuff

How can they say with a Straight face it's animated?

Give the whole thing a layer of Uncanny Valley, and the terrible CG at 1:09 doesn't seem quite so bad.

I think it looks sorta ugly. Why go through the trouble of making everything look like its smeared in Vaseline when youve already got real actors doing their thing.

The rotoscope look and weird saturation makes it a bit easier to convincingly add stuff to the background, plus some CG tanks or whatever.

Looks like it'd be distracting tbh. If it's real actors, just use the real actors.
