The fact that they pushed BW to May 2021 basically says everything that needs to be said about how well Mulan did. If Mulan did well, I'm sure we'd be streaming BW in November.

I'd say it isn't really comparable because the live action remake movies are garbage, but all previous garbage live action movies have made billions of dollars for some unfathomable reason. And ironically Mulan is the only I wouldn't have minded watching since it doesn't really dump on the animated movie like the others do, it just looks like a normal bad movie.

Heck it might have been a good movie if it was a wuxia movie like Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Black Widow on the other hand would have probably gotten a lot more sales if it was released on that crappy streaming service. But I'm pretty sure Disney is more worried about piracy because if it was released on Disney Plus, the pirated copy would be more easily distributed compared to a pirated camcorder theater release type. They need that international release box office. The international box office actually offers up more money than domestic nowadays, even without China numbers.

I mean, Mulan was a perfect storm of bad decisions. Can't read too much into how well it did.

It's sort of weird how Netflix can drop $200 million to make a movie just to put it on its streaming site and still make cash back, but Disney, a billion dollar corporation before Disney+ can't do it. Then they have the gall to charge extra to watch a new movie like Mulan. Meanwhile, Netflix is like hey everyone here's what's coming next month.

Back then, the people in charge at Disney were kinda sorta sexist, and said that a female lead driven solo wouldn't work.

You are making multiple assumptions about Netflix that are very difficult to substantiate given the incredible opaqueness of their viewership data.

But Netflix has over twice the viewers and a mature business. Individual shows and movies aren't what makes them money but the sheer onslaught of new content to keep people from forgetting to unsubscribe each month. I'll wager that new subscriptions associated with people wanting to watch the Irishman probably did not cover the cost of the movie, but new subscriptions, plus the low cost of interest on borrowing, plus the PR that came with it probably helped keep people from unsubscribing, when combined with their other new content.

Mulan wasn't even part of Disney+'s division, it was part of the movie division and was budgeted and designed around a wide-theater release, not as a planned expansion to Disney+ content. So Disney tried to make what money they could before sending it to Disney+ as normal. Disney has absolutely spent hundreds of millions on Disney+ specific content as part of its planned Disney+ growth, but that doesn't mean they are going cannibalize other division content without making some money back on it first.

im actually curious to see it but yeah, why not just put it on Disney+ instead of making us wait more for a theater release?

heck its not like people are gonna rush to the cinemas in droves once the pandemic slows down some more...

I still have some interest. Nothing they can do will ever top Infinity War/Endgame, that's true, and The Avengers book is closed, however there are still several chapters that need their own conclusions. Like GotG and Ant-Man. And I'm sort of interested in seeing how MCU will deal with the X-Men down the line.

Phase 4 is just aftermath stuff of Phase 3.
