I'd much rather have a consistent, lower frame rate than a higher frame rate that keeps dropping

And my monitor is fixed to 60fps. That said, 50fps with v-sync should also work, right?

If you can't maintain stable frames, I'd just disable v-sync and accept the tearing.

It's a shame all the good games are badly optimised P4G, Watch Dogs 2, FF 15...

the pc version is an unoptimised mess from what i've read. it's a shame because i was really in the mood to play it the other week

I wouldn't call it a mess. The drops aren't big drops (about 5fps max), I'm just really fussy about that sort of thing

The game itself is really fun, definitely worth playing!

I've never played an Ubisoft game that didn't run kinda shitty on PC.

Some graphical settings are more taxing on the PC than others (depending on the game) , lowering something like post process or ambient occlusion , or changing anti aliasing mode can boost the frame rate by a surprising amount .

Try researching which settings are the most taxing in this game , and you might be able to play at a stable 60fps .

I followed all the recommendations in the Nvidia article and was still getting dips

Out of curiosity I decided to turn V-Sync off to see what kind of performance I was getting. Turns out the frame rate was all over the place from 80 down to 50

It's annoying, to say the least

You can try using Rivatuner statistics server or something like that to cap your FPS if there isn't an option for it in game. It is annoying having to install extra software just to get a game to run though..

The game has a FPS cap built in

My problem isn't the maximum frame rate, it's the minimum lol

I found a list of fixes on Steam and I'm carrying them out. One interesting one was the HD textures pack, apparently the original textures are bugged?
