Animation nowadays seem to be one of the following:
-Kid- or family-oriented
-Raunchy "adult" comedy
-Anime, which has its own stigma (and is not even looked upon highly in its own nation)

Animation has its own strengths and there are things that it can do much more easily (or at all) than in live action, but the more serious animated projects don't seem to get made because of the views people have on the medium. Of course, animation is also very expensive, which may also be a massive roadblock (can't bankroll a big animated epic if it will just be more like throwing millions of dollars into a black hole).

In America, animation has a long way to go, but in some other countries, it's taken more seriously. GKids has been spearheading this sort of ideology over here in the last decade, but they still aren't really a "mainstream" distributor.

The oscars is a gigantic circle-jerk, and will remain so indefinitely.

I don't really disagree with this, but it's honestly pretty rare that an animated movie IS the best movie of the year. The Disney comment is spot on though. It's embarrassing sometimes, especially that year where Big Hero 6 won. Oof.

It already is. I saw today that in the latest issue of Sight and Sound, a serious and respected film magazine, there's a big feature on anime for example.
