I think theres a world where we put more resources into building communities up than tearing them down. If you consider crime, especially petty crime, as at least one part a response to societal problems, law enforcement would be a harmful stopgap in this sense. So theres likely a better way to incorporate both. I dont think its controversial to say that our criminal justice system is inefficient and often times harmful. Its certainly disproportionate.

Yes that's true. Mostly I see these calls for abolishing police and defunding them and I'm just like... "Okay, so what's going to fill the vacuum left?" People aren't just going to suddenly be nice to each other and changes like that will take a long time to even see effects, if any.

i literally listened to a guy on NPR this morning who was completely on board with abolishing police and when the NPR interviewer asked him what fills the void / what's the plan for a post-police existence he outright went "uhhh i think we are all trying to figure that out"

Who do you want to go after criminals? Vigilantes? Who gets approved to be a vigilante? Where do you hold him? Who do they answer to?

We don't need to defund them, they need to be held accountable for their actions

"Defund the police" doesn't necessarily mean "get rid of them", but more "lower their resources and narrow their field of responsibility" and then redirect that money towards "softer" crisis, where de-escalation and counseling would be a more proper response.

They could still exist as a response to serious violence. They just wouldn't be responding to every single 911 call.

The idea that daily life would be anarchy and destruction simply cause there werent cops is so dumb.

The vast majority of people arent gonna decide to just become rapists or thieves or vandals (or whatever the fuck you think would happen) just cause theres no cops anymore.

meanwhile most of the types who would do all that in a world without cops? Theyre already doing it as is.

So, like who? Medical people for people on drugs? Those people tend to by violent. Breaking up a first fight? Those people tend to by violent. Stopping a man from assaulting his wife and kids? Yeah, child services are doing a real bang up job, despite them always getting more and more money every year.

I totally get your ideal, just not the logic. I agree that a lot of these crimes should be decriminalized, but then that just makes more and more people do them.

The idea that people on drugs inherently tend to be violent is so dumb. Alcohol is far more likely to make people violent.

Hell a couple music festivals around here have banned liquor and allow drug use (and have cool down areas and testing available) specifically because it cut back in fighting so much. And to great success.

Sure it will. Fire and punish bad cops. I think cops should be judged by the public, not the law. Well, you know what I mean, lol. Throw them in jail for their crimes and stuff, but the public should have more say in who gets to be cops

Also, some political person in Oregon suggest that all cops should be in a national database with their entire work history available to other police stations. I would say it should be allowed to be seen by the public, but that might cause some danger issues for arresting officers' family.
