If you go with that logic there is never a good time to build.

Except that both AMD's new processors and Nvidia's new video cards are supposed to release in September/October. Meaning the 2nd generation of raytracing hardware with a significant performance boost.

while most leaps in tech are incremental, this upcoming one is a large one and therefore you'll gain much more by waiting this time around.

Its called ps5. Only costs $400 and you'll be able to play games with the same graphic as ultra PC settings for the next 10 years without having to upgrade anything

The PS5 tech demo ran better on a high level laptop than the PS5. You probably won't find a $400 computer equivalent of a PS5 for a year or two, but if OP has $1,500 to spend they should be able to easily build a system better than a PS5.

Anyway, getting a high end Ryzen CPU should be a good investment. However, if you can, I would wait a few months on the graphics cards since the 2000 series wasn't even that big of a jump when it was released about 2 years ago. A 2000 series will still work well (My 1070 still does great) but the 3000 series may be a huge jump in power.

yeah that demo ran better on a laptop with a 2080 which is significantly less powerful than the desktop 2080

the desktop 2080 is about to be obsolete before the PS5/XSX even launch with the 3000 series launching in September/October

Wait till X because of Y is a meme.

Sort of. If you need something right away usually you should go for it.

However, there are optimal times to buy things. I remember buying a 770 video card at the end of its life cycle (a bit before the 900 series was announced, there was no 800 series for some reason) and it quickly became outdated. I bought a 1070 a little bit after it was released since it was a HUGE leap in power and it is still holding out today.

Great leaps also come with great cost increases. The only benefit he'd gain by waiting is the inevitable clearance sales of older hardware. Though I suppose that may be worth it on its own.

Spending a lot on something can be worth it in the long run. Buying a new expensive graphics card every so often can be cheaper than buying a bunch of cheaper ones often.
