Board 8 > Need advice on a situation with my old apartment.

I moved out of my apartment before lease ended, but did it by the book and official. They needed two months notice and we abided by that rule. The early termination of lease buyout was equivalent to two months rent ($2700) which I thought was fair. We put in this notice on February 29th.

We ended up cleaning out our apartment and moving everything earlier than expected, so we turned in our keys on March 19th and all other related items. I also have documented proof of correspondence from staff, acknowledging we did this.

So heres where it gets wonky. I ask staff if they want me to pay then and there for the two month buyout. They said to wait until April 29th which would be the due date for the payment. They told me to wait because if they were able to rent my apartment to someone sooner they could prorate my buyout fee and it would be less than the $2800.

Since March 19th, Ive probably called and emailed once a week trying to find out if they want me to come in and pay, but theyve kept saying they will handle it and they will call me back. They also definitely have numerous ways to contact me.

Well its the middle of May now and Im well past the buyout due date and still nothing. Ive always been on good terms with the apartment complex and their staff and have known as one of their better renters. This is a large apartment company (Greystar) rather than a landlord. These were also technically luxury apartments.

Do you think its possible they are trying to fudge numbers for me or something to get me out of this buyout? My lease would have ended in June normally if we didnt terminate early.

Should I just leave it alone? It sort of feels like they are dropping hints that they trying to help me, but Im just worried about debt collectors coming in after the fact.

Just leave it alone yeah. You've already done everything you can possibly do, it's out of your hands now. Best not to stress about it.
