I bought a whetstone, but I haven't tried using it yet because my knife still works well enough. Scared to fuck it up, since I've never used a whetstone before. It's also German stainless steel, so it has this gigantic bolster in the way that'll limit its lifespan somewhat.

edit: it's a 1000x grit. If I ever get competent with it and buy some higher quality knives, I'll get a set. Just use a honing rod atm to keep the edge straight.

OK so practice on crappy knives. You probably have plenty laying around your kitchen.

Those "v" things will utterly destroy a serrated knife, yes.

Great for axes and hatchets, though.

Thats called a honing rod. It straightens the edge out, but its not a sharpener

whetstones are a game changer. Anyone who takes their shit seriously and treats themselves to quality chefs knives needs one.

Dont bother with one of these. They dont do shit.

It comes down to the angle you're trying to achieve. Too harsh and unrefined for putting a good edge on a kitchen knife but fine for axes.

You should be using a honing steel every day, not grinding your knife
