I'm about 10 hours in, just got my stuff stolen by Dalton and wow this game rules. The only other thing I know is that you can recruit Magus and I'm a little nervous about missing something and not recruiting him. No spoilers please though

Nice, enjoy a timeless classic. I played it for the first time in 2011 when it finally arrived on the Wii Virtual Console. I remember very little about the plot but do remember absolutely loving it.

Keep your expectations middling and enjoy the ride!

It's one of the few rpgs that's a constant 8/10 throughout, with no weak points, and somehow comes out a 10/10

I hold the (somewhat uncommon?) opinion that the games like a 7 up until the end of the early 2300AD segment, at which point it becomes a 9 and never looks back. Which is to say, it starts off as a decent enough little romp but a few hours in is when it clicks for me in a big and captivating way.

The two-decade dormancy of this franchise is an absolute friggin shame.

I would honestly put the tipping point of the game a little bit later than that, but otherwise, same sentiment. It does take a bit of time to really get going, but I think the point it starts approaching GOAT tier isn't until you finally get to 10,000 BC for the first time.

The coolest thing is easily experimenting in combat with different characters and techs. So much fun

It's a fine opinion, the 2300 arc is a little too long.

But otherwise this game is flawless. I don't know any game that embodies the concept of "perfect" better than CT.

Wow I just got Crono back and I could have got him back way sooner. I feel like I'm almost done with all of the side quests already and I could have had him back immediately. Based on my knowledge of the game I was expecting some intricate quest to recruit Magus, like Vincent in FF7, instead of just asking me if we want to fight him.

Magus is great and I love his silly hovering around levels. If this game ever gets a remake I'd like to see more interaction between Frog and Magus. Frog just kinda shrugs and says okay you're cool now even though his entire character so far has been to defeat Magus.

Game is still great though

Though there are 4 different ways of going to Lavos and you might as well reset the game to see them all!

This statement makes me remember the smell of Nintendo Power magazine when I was reading it. They covered a decent chunk of the game leading up to its release. I was hyped up to the extreme and then wasn't at all disappointed.

Which makes no sense to me considering by that logic if Janus isn't in the same time period as Glenn shouldn't Glenn change back anyway? Oh well. It also just occurred to me three characters have canon names no matter what you choose.

Don't really have a way to play Chrono Cross without emulators and I don't really care that much.

I beat this game last week after like 18-20 hours so I guess I'll give some final thoughts.

Overall it was good and I can see why it's so revered. I couldn't help but imagine how much better it would have been as a modern game though. The story really needed another 10 hours to really flesh itself out. I mean a lot happens but everything moves so quickly there's not really any time to appreciate anything. The campfire scene is the only one I can think of where the party even interacts with each other (minus the scenes with people in your party obviously).

Battle system was good but by the end of the game I was feeling some of the limits caused by the simplicity. The tech attacks are cool but it usually ends up to just using whatever one does the most damage. By the end of the game I was just letting Chrono auto attack with Rainbow and Cool Sunglasses and he was doing more damage than most tech attacks.

I was also surprised how much this felt like a Dragon Quest game. I know Toriyama designs characters for both but the tone and world were very similar to DQ.

For when this game came out I would give it a 9/10 but if this game came out today I think it would be a 7/10. A modern remake like FF7R would be amazing though.

Yeah single techs are just straight up better than double techs towards the end.

The damage is nearly the same and you can attack with more people, or get more flexibility with healing.

I always do the fight first, and then reset the game. The duel is too good, and it's one of the harder fights in the game due to only having one character.
