recruiter just came to me with a job that I could definitely swing, it's very similar to what i do now but obviously with a different company.

commute is about 15 - 20 min minutes shorter than my current commute & the pay is about $20k - $25k higher. industry is definitely less interesting to me and the scope/responsibilities of my job wouldnt change, not really many new systems/software to learn etc.

previously my general plan is to stay at my job for a little bit longer, learn some more (lots of stuff going on here atm), maybe get started on an MA, and then find a new job that is a step up and more interesting. but money is always nice lol.

i am going to speak with their people anyway but what are your thoughts?

Do the new company have the same opportunity for advancement? Or are you trying to advance with a different company anyway?
id probably have to move out to move up in my current place, no clue what the structure is like in the new company.

These days the only way you get substantial pay increases is by switching jobs or companies.

Take the money and run.

Right now? Maybe not because I'm expecting to move up with a ~30%ish increase in pay in a year. But in general yeah I'd take a lateral move with a shorter commute and 20k increase.
yeah im underpaid for what i am doing now but it's b/c i was hired with no direct experience for the role I am doing, i had to learn a lot on the job

true

from looking at the company this place seems like it might offer actual advancement, looks like they have a whole dept for what i do, whereas my current company is me and my boss (the director)

I won't disregard having good coworkers, as that is one of my four staples for having work I like, but that much money and a shorter commute is a big deal.

Hell, I would take that offer even if it was a downward move if the pay was higher.

I almost did that, too. Moving due to my wife's new job and I was a finalist for an Assistant Director position that pays more than my current position as Director (it's a larger company).

I did end up getting offered a Director position with comparable pay to my current one, so ultimately I turned down the Assistant Director gig, but it wasn't an easy decision to make.

Sounds to me like there aren't really any downsides to your current option to move.

Trust me, your employers dont see it the same way you do. Youre just a tool to make them more money. Theyre going to continue to use you until you stop being useful to them, after which theyll toss you away.

Make sure HR is directly involved and get a physical printed copy of *everything* officially tied to the position (responsibilities, exceptions, etc.) at the time of the offer.

so it looks like i have an interview tomorrow (different company), probably just an HR phone screen. this one would also be a 25k increase, i'd get stock options, but it would require me commuting into manhattan daily (once shit calms down) so that's probably like 80 min commute if i leave from my town or 60 min if i drive to a bigger train station 20 min away. hmmmm

my friend started her new job at the BBC a few weeks ago and on her second day, the lockdown over here started and she had to WFH for the rest of the time

she finds it a bit of a struggle since she's still learning but everyone there is v friendly apparently. would you be cool starting at a new company during this time?

went fine, was kind of weird tbh, it was just the phone screen with the company's HR/recruiter type person but it felt kind of robotic and impersonal. not conversational or whatever. just not great vibes

why do ppl from HR always give off those vibes

you'd think they'd actually be personable towards their fellow human beings

She was probably doing like 30 phone interviews so after a while she just gets numb and probably why it comes off as impersonal.

It's different when it's a manager who only does interviews like once or twice a year for a new hire in their department. HR people do interviews all the time since that's literally their job. It's also an interview for a new hire they will likely never interact with, so the enthusiasm just isn't there.

my counter argument is that i have a mortgage, kid on the way etc and i can make this much money at most jobs of this niche (i am currently underpaid for my role)

I'd take the money and invest it. If you keep your living standards the same for the next 4 years you can have almost 100k to invest. If you do it the right way you'll be financially independent 10-20 years.
