I remember people liking After Years, so get it if you liked FF4.

FF4DS happened back in 2008-ish. I've only played up until a certain point then abandoned it for other stuff, but I recall enjoying it.

After Years is episodic, with you playing through as each different character/party on a separate save. Each character also gets a bonus dungeon to level up and get items and stuff to prepare them for the endgame since the save files carry over to the final one.

Story wise, it's nothing special. You have a lot of stuff that hasn't really changed since the original or gets repeated as a reference to the original. There's also a lot of overlap between stories.

so that's kind of the problem, a lot of repeated content and gameplay wise you're stuck using mid game equipment and spells until you get to the final story so it doesn't really feel like you're making progress.

I haven't played the 3d version (it's based on a mobile port) but I think it's supposed to be worse because it cuts a lot of gameplay content.
