https://ringthedamnbell.wordpress.com/2019/04/18/in-rod-we-trust-the-wwe-storyline-that-almost-happened/

A funeral was scheduled for Mr. McMahon which would introduce WWE fans to someone no one was yet familiar with. During Vinces memorial service, his long lost brother Roderick would attend. Yes, Vincent Kennedy McMahons real life older brother Rod was going to be used in a WWE storyline. Vince and Rod were raised by separate families and were not very close growing up. From all indications, Rod was never interested in getting involved in the professional wrestling business.

As the years moved on, Roderick and Vince formed a closer relationship and Vince wanted to utilize his brother in this storyline. According to Bauer, the other McMahon family would be used to run WWE programming with Roderick the anti Vince character. Apparently, Rod was going to be nice and kind and everything Mr. McMahon wasnt. It would eventually lead to a McMahon civil war over control over the entire WWE empire.

Well it looked real. I don't know how they did it. He gets in the car and then as soon as his foot goes up, he closes the door and BOOM.

Even had the Benoit tragedy not taken place, Vince McMahon's death was one of the worst ideas for a plot line. Like, "Goldberg refused to follow the script" levels of bad writing.

I missed the limo scene when it aired and tuned in next week during the bell toll for Vince McMahon. There was about a two second stretch where I thought he had legitimately died until Michael Cole and JBL started arguing about how disrespectful the fans were for booing a dead man. (Again, I didn't know this was after an explosion. I no longer followed wrestling gossip online. I just tuned in to a bell ringing and Vince McMahon's portrait on the Titantron.)

I don't know what made them think that was a good idea. It's the same bell toll they used when 9/11 happened, when Owen Hart died, when Andre the Giant died. Did Vince just want to hear his own bell toll while he was still alive? Why incorporate that into a character death storyline? Why even have a character death storyline in pro wrestling?

I'd hate anything that put even more McMahons on television, but it would've been preferable to one of my favorite wrestlers killing his family and then offing himself.

I shall set down in a few lines how upright Maldoror was during his early years, when he lived happy. There: done.

Your memory is wrong. Vince died at the end of that Raw in the limo, and then the next week we open up with RIP Benoit, he's killed his whole family. There was no RIP Vince

I couldn't find video of it, but Wikipedia documents the event:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-bell_salute

While ten-bell salutes have typically been reserved for real-life deaths, it has been used in kayfabe at least thrice in WWE history (see worked shoot). The most recent instance was in June 2007 for Mr. McMahon (WWE chairman Vince McMahon's on-screen persona), as part of an angle where he was inside a limousine that exploded, and was presumed dead.

Ah, it was featured on the June 12, 2007 broadcast of ECW.

ECW - featured footage from earlier in the day of the WWE flag flying at half staff in Stamford, CT, followed by footage of Vince McMahon's limo exploding the previous night on Raw and the announcement he was presumed dead and the matches later in the show would be held in dedication of Vince; included a tolling of the bell 10 times in memory of Vince, during which Joey Styles & Tazz mentioned the live audience's response was very disrespectful; featured footage from WWE.com of a fire truck arriving to the limo explosion to put out the blaze; included a closing segment once again showing the limo explosion:

I guess my memory was faulty about who the commentators were though.

Wow, I never actually saw the full tribute aside from the short interviews with various wrestlers. Better download before WWE blocks it on copyright grounds and it disappears from the internet.

Yep, you're right. It wasn't back to back Mondays, there was 1 in-between the Limo blowing up and Benoit killing his family

@Skye_Reynolds

No, I'm sure you're right. Look at this, this is the week before Benoit murders -

McMahons vs. McMahons at the center of the biggest storyline.

Yup, that sounds like Vince's vision of wrestling.
