If the story went with an unreliable narrator approach and we find out at the end the whole "I was a genius saving the world until Superman showed up" was his personal perspective and he was awful the entire time it could work, but it'd have to be a bait-and-switch like that unless they just rewrote the character. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz. Like a guy who gradually gets worse and worse as he rises to the top, screws over and hurts others and always finds a way to justify it. But at the end of the day he's just a selfish asshole who wants to be on top and is willing to do anything to be there.
