There's a difference between knowing scholarly things about the language and history of Asia as a continent, and having a near-obsessive knowledge of anime with a little bit of cultural context on the side.

Im the first group though I havent even watched anime in 2019 and I find China and Mongolia more interesting than Japan. People do this now for anything they think might be relating even remotely to Japan. There's a guy in my D&D group that's half-Japanese. After the session, we were playing Smash Bros. on his Switch when he recommended we play Nine Parchments. The gameplay is pretty close to Magicka, and the character design and artstyle is very western. In fact, the characters almost look like Dreamworks characters. The voice acting, story, art, is all obviously western, and the game was made by a western developer. Yet, from the moment everyone else saw the game, they all decided it was a "weeb game" for some reason, even though nothing about it looks remotely anime-ish. My guess is they decided on that because it was on the Switch that's owned by, and recommended by the one guy that's half-Japanese. --- WHO MODS THE MODERATORS? ... Copied to Clipboard!
