They were just a normal but little odd family before the events of the game took place. I recently played the daughters dlc which showed the family before the infection took hold. Outside of a note mentioning Jack slapped Lucas for being on his phone, but that's more Lucas being an asshole really. Then the infection came and ruined their lives.
