I grew up in the south where many older folks pronounced "fire" kind of like "far."
My parents didnt, but some more distant relatives did. I remember being told to "look at the 'fire'" and thought for a minute that "look at the far" must be some expression that I hadn't heard before.

it's a musical term. it means playing something when you have nothing written down, i.e. no concrete plans for what you're going to do, just playing off of each other

It means you are going to wing it, or improvise - if you don't have the sheet music in front of you then you have to play it by listening to the scales the other musicians are working to.
