Current Events > A friend of mine picked up Chrono Trigger DS yesterday.

He's never played it. Doesn't know any of the story beats. I almost envy him. Playing through that game the first time was almost transcendent. I'd never played anything like it before. I look forward to hearing what he has to say about the game as he plays it.

Yeah it had the perfect enhancements

Mind you, the additions to Chrono Trigger DS are marginal fluff that really don't do anything. There's some epic gear in there, though.

I have it myself, & from what I've heard about all the later versions, the DS is the best one overall. Also reminds me to try I am Setsuna at some point.

Sir, do you forget how atrocious the PS1 release was? Being able to play with the amazing anime scenes without 5 minute load times is a gift from the gods. AND, that's without the inclusion of the Schala plot being resolved to give a direct connection to Chrono Cross and Guile's true identity.

its a good game but its reputation is really overblown. its a game that does really basic stuff very very well but doesnt really set itself apart all that much in terms of uniqueness

You don't get to come at the game almost 25 years after its release, and say it doesn't do enough to set itself apart. Compare the game against its contemporaries, and not what the genre has evolved into since then. There was nothing else like it back when it released.

I sort of agree, but wouldn't quite go that far. It wasn't revolutionary or anything, but few turn-based games at that time eschewed random battles, and the way time travel meshed with gameplay was fairly unique (it probably still is in fact).

Maybe that you played. Lots of really cinematic JRPGs like Lunar and FFVI proceeded it and games that are just as much on its level like Tales of Phantasia, SD3 and Star Ocean came out not long after it.

If jrpgs hadn't still been such a niche market even during the SNES era and we were actually regularly getting releases from japan at the time I seriously doubt people would remember CT as glowingly as they do

I would have loved to have seen Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean get a port over here during the SNES era. However, to coin Chrono Trigger as mediocre in relation to these is severely disingenuous. Lunar was a Sega CD exclusive, and the game wasn't _that_special. FFVI was an evolution of FFIV, which I already love. It wasn't a unique experience like Chrono Trigger was.

I prefer the SNES version. The DS's hyper-literal retranslation sucked too much of the heart and soul out of the dialogue, I didn't particularly care for the Final Fantasy homogenization of some of the higher-level weapons and armor, and what little of the extra content I played was a perfect example of unnecessary bloat.

I never said that, I said that all those games were at its level.

I don 't think CT is a bad game. In fact I really like it. I just don't think it deserves to be put on such a high pedestal as it often is online
