"Then you have Brexit, where the UK is trying to leave the EU, and it feels like there are lots of walls and people thinking only about themselves in the world.

"In Death Stranding we're using bridges to represent connection - there are options to use them or break them. It's about making people think about the meaning of connection."

Kojima is keen to stress that his game's message is not targeted at any one country or community: bringing people back together is a universal theme in his eyes.

"When we're connected we have a responsibility over each other. But social media doesn't seem to have that responsibility, for example.

"Caring for each other is what makes people feel good. We've always been like that in the past.

"I want people to remember that and feel it in my game."

I obviously am well aware of this and indeed the extremely politicised nature of a lot of Japanese art. I am simply restating a common argument used by Western Gamers when they complain about SJWs or whatever

Most JRPG plots are literally about political turmoil. Just because it's a fantasy setting doesn't mean it can't parallel real world problems.

People who say there are no politicals in Japanese games are the type to preach "turning your brain off" to enjoy things.

Thing is, they never turn their brains on.

Games can be and definitely are political in Japan from time to time. It's just not often American politics so it's easy to miss.

Yeah, those people are idiots. Most Japanese games are political (and usually favors progressive values). Perhaps its just too subtle for them to notice. Although even games like Dead Rising thats as in your face about it as possible dont seem to get noticed.

They kind of are. There is a surprisingly large percentage of women here who also fully embrace big anime titties. I think if you come from a place like the US with strong prude cultural currents it can be hard to understand Japan at first. Most people here just don't think sex is bad and don't have a problem using anime titties on basically everything to try to sell it.

He's a unique Japanese developer but his games are still very Japanese. Hell I've seen people point out that it's interesting watching famous Western actors basically talk off a script that's more like what you'd see in an anime in Death Stranding.
