Fighters used to be the only day 1 releases I'd buy because of the online community. Now the whole DLC character situation has gotten out of control. I just wait for the complete edition and play offline.

Pretty much.

It's also one of the most lucrative genres for DLC in order to keep interest going for months (and sometimes years) after release.

I think it's because they were already used to buying multiple editions. Street Fighter IV, for instance, had four releases, with updated mechanics and new characters. Is it really so different from buying a new season pass once a year to update the roster and the mechanics? It may even be cheaper.

Of course, that's only if you look at characters. Start looking at costumes, music packs, random customization/etc. it gets a bit out of hand. But I don't really think this business model is all that new, just more convenient.

I feel like this is true for a decent number of Japanese games. Monster Hunter World, FFXV, Kingdom Hearts 3, etc. are getting DLC additions instead of a complete rerelease. You can buy the "upgraded" version in stores still, but you can upgrade with DLC for a somewhat reduced price.

You have a good point, but mostly in highlighting that fighting games have been exploitative long before DLC, with the thousand different versions of Street Fighter 2 being the earliest example.

My problem with so much stuff being pushed to DLC versus new editions, is that DLC stays full price forever. For example, I have some friends that play Tekken 7 and I would like to get Tekken 7 so that I could get better and play with them on the PS4. To have all the characters, I need to spend at least $75 on three season packs before I even touch the base copy of the game. Even if I find the base game super discounted, there's no way I can reduce the cost of the season packs.

I deleted my post because I didn't realize SFIV characters were available via DLC as well (didn't play the game much tbh, and I don't like keeping up posts with incorrect facts or, in this case, implied ones). But if you go back to 2 or 3 I'm sure that holds true.

I think FG players don't complain partly because the Skull Girls KickStarter showed a lot of people in the community that developing new characters was difficult and expensive. And these are people who stick with a game for years, so an extra $30 a year to play new characters doesn't bother them so much after buying newer editions to effectively accomplish the same thing.

This is true. But unlike many other genres of games, I think there are actual valid reasons for the high price of continued support of the game. I don't really think FG DLC structure is egregiously exploitative, though it may indeed be exploitative.

I should also mention I almost exclusively mean this in terms of new characters as DLC. When dishing out new costumes and shit on the side that are out of the scope of the Season Pass, it's much more sketchy to me. I draw this line because the price of new characters with animations, playstyle design, balance in the overall game, along with continued balance of all characters of the roster has been demonstrated to me. Costumes, on the other hand, are easy to make and should be priced or included appropriately.

It's closer to a junkie who needs his fix.

For people who love fighting games, there is nothing else in gaming even close to the same experience and there's only a couple of companies that put out titles worth playing. Even then, if you only really like 2D vs 3D, or footsie-grounded vs chaotic-freeform, there might be one company that makes that type of game.

So you keep going back, because there's literally nothing else like it, and nobody else is even trying to enter the space.

Any hype for a new fighting game is immediately soured when snobs start over-analyzing the footage and picking apart the gameplay to see if it's tournament-viable.
