I'm actually a bit suspicious of just *how* open they are about being terrible and inexperienced etc. Seem to be trying to shift the blame onto the people who hired them entirely while simultaneously saying they've learned so much etc so that people aren't discouraged from hiring them. Seems wild that they've basically dropped two projects now in Star Wars and that Confederate show for HBO because of the Netflix stuff. Not sure I'd be rushing to hire these guys.

I feel like pinning them as underqualfied to handle it s a pretty unfair criticism altogether, considering how well they did to start with. The first 4 seasons were terrific, they were clearly up to it.

They just kinda shat the bed.

Although you might say they were carried by the material in the books, which is what the article is suggesting. I dunno.

That's really the best and only way to respond to the level of flak though, isn't it? Anything else would come across as defensive and petty.

Thats pretty much been their MO until now, though. This is new for them.

But as you say yourself, it directly contradicts the fact that the earlier seasons were much much better. Surely that wouldn't be the case if as suggested they were totally unprepared and winging it to begin with? It just seems really dishonest at best

Holy shit that Twitter thread was very frustrating. there are so many hardworking independent writers and directors that can't find work and these dude's basically conned their way into making their production of GoT a film school for themselves lol this Q&A was basically telling every company to never hire them.

Yeah for sure. That's kinda why I feel like they are intentionally hamming it up to shift the blame, though. Although yeah I totally agree that I don't see how they get many other gigs with stuff like this knocking about but who knows.

Its just more Old Boys Club shit as usual. This dudes dad was a Goldman Sachs CEO, worth hundreds of millions. Its not even like this is some scrappy rags-to-riches con that we can at least feel a little good about despite how badly they trashed one of the best fantasy series ever.

Didn't they not want to let other writers take over the show?

Anyway, I was really interested in seeing just how bad their Star Wars was going to be. Good news for fans, bad news for me.

They definitely got lucky with GoT. They are really fucking pushing their luck though because it really does look like a con after that Q&A. Leaving Star Wars for creative differences would be one thing, but they left because they got a 9 figure deal ($200 mil) from Netflix. Just like they rushed GoT out because of their Disney deal.

I'm guessing working for Disney was too big for their britches and working for companies more hands off and relatively smaller potatoes like Netflix or HBO is more in line with something they can manage to manipulate to fit their 'unique experience' lol

They were very open about how clueless they were, indicating that the first 4 seasons were probably carried by the rest of the crew. This isn't a surprise - it's quite well-known that film and television are team efforts. Sure you might have auteurs who like to put their creative mark on their work, but these are massive projects with huge crews of incredibly skilled people.
