Which is more legitimate?

I wouldn't say one is any more legitimate than the other, but I find fanart tends to be less terrible than fanfiction, simply by virtue of the fact that people are more readily able to look at a picture they've drawn and decide that it's not worth sharing than they are able to read a story they've written and decide that. It's just easier to see the bigger picture (literally, I suppose) with visual art.
