They're illegal, unless you either buy a shell and drop it onto a legal Nissan chassis (meaning no RB26DETT, which defeats the purpose), or you get one of the very rare few that were legally imported and modified with DOT blessing. There's a lot of grey market ones floating around too that can't be properly registered and are likely to be impounded and crushed if/when you're caught.
